Montreal Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier has been named Major League Soccer’s player of the month.

Bernier, in his first MLS season, had three goals and three assists in August to help the Impact post a 4-0-0 record for the month and get back into the MLS playoff picture.

The native of Brossard, Que., had two goals, including one on a penalty kick, to give Montreal a 3-0 win over D.C. United on Sept. 25. At the time that increased the Impact’s winning streak to five games.

Meanwhile, Columbus Crew forward Federico Higuain was named player of the week for the second straight time. Higuain set up all four Columbus goals in a pair of late 2-1 victories over the Philadelphia Union and Impact on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1, respectively.
