Toronto FC fans can mark Monday on their calendar as the return of star striker Jermain Defoe.

The star striker sent out a tweet saying his rehab has gone well and he will be back in Toronto on Monday. Defoe has been back in England nursing a groin injury.

The MLS club had previously said the 31-year-old England forward was expected back Saturday.

Manager Greg Vanney says the Oct. 4 game in Los Angeles against the Galaxy may be the most realistic target for Defoe's comeback game.

Toronto (9-11-7) has seven games left in its bid to climb back into playoff status. If Defoe returns against the Galaxy, he could play in five of them.

Defoe leads the team in scoring with 11 goals despite playing in just 16 league games.

Also Wednesday, Toronto announced the hiring of Dan Calichman as an assistant coach. A former MLS defender who played with Vanney at the Los Angeles Galaxy, he has been brought on to help with the TFC defence.
