Danny Koevermans once again provided all the offence Toronto FC needed.

Koevermans headed in a goal in the 40th minute as Toronto FC defeated Panamanian side Tauro F.C. 1-0 Tuesday in a Group C CONCACAF Champions League match.

The former Dutch international has been on a roll lately. Koevermans scored both goals in Toronto's 2-0 Major League Soccer win over Colorado on Saturday.

Overall Koevermans has six goals in seven MLS games.

"He's a very good striker," head coach and technical director Aron Winter said. "He's not only waiting for the ball, but he anticipates, watching always, (asking) 'okay, when I'm in the box where could the ball fall that I'm close to the ball to make a goal?"'

It was Toronto's second win in Group C, both coming against Tauro.

Tauro is still looking for its first win after losing to Toronto 2-1 in Panama City and earning draws with FC Dallas and Mexican team Pumas.

Toronto was coming in off losses to Dallas and Pumas in Champions League play but had won its past two matches in Major League Soccer.

Toronto moved into second in the group with six points. FC Dallas leads with seven and Pumas has four. Those teams play Wednesday.

"The team played very well," said former German international Torsten Frings, who Winter moved from midfielder to sweeper against Tauro. "We didn't let the other team have very many chances."

Winter said he will use Frings as either a midfielder or a sweeper between the two centre backs depending on how the opposition plays.

"You can choose to play 4-3-3 with him between the two central defenders but we're always watching the strengths of the opponents," Winter said. "In the first half especially, my central defenders went wide and he's the guy (in the middle) that you can play always and he's calm and comfortable on the ball.

"It depends on how the opponent is playing and if you can play him between the central defenders, but he's a midfielder.....It's an option, he can play in that role and he can play it well."

With Toronto ahead 1-0 in the second half Tauro began to press forward and threatened to take control of midfield.

Early in the second half, goalkeeper Milos Kocic, who has played all the Champions League matches for Toronto, came out nicely to punch a ball away from in front of the goal.

After Toronto put some pressure on the Tauro goal, Temistocles Perez had a chance in the 65th minute but Kocic made the save.

But Toronto did not stop trying to put pressure on the Tauro goal, particularly on counters.

But after a corner in stoppage time, Tauro was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area and Matt Stinson was given a yellow card. The free kick was blocked and the final whistle sounded.

Toronto controlled play early in the first half and had a couple of half lukewarm chances.

Ashtone Morgan lobbed a high ball just to the right of the top corner in the sixth minute.

Ryan Johnson sent Koevermans in from the left in the 12th minute and the striker's shot was easily handled by 'keeper Alvaro Anzola.

About nine minutes later, Anzola was knocked to ground when he went up with Koevermans for a long pass from TFC defender Andy Iro to the front of the goal.

Tauro had its first chance in the 32nd minute when Victor Mendieta hit outside of the left post on a flick-on from Perez off a corner kick.

A few minutes later, defender Richard Eckersley tested Anzola with a shot as he made a strong run up the right side. Eckersley who missed last Wednesday's 4-0 loss to Pumas in Mexico City was playing a strong game.

Koevermans headed home a goal with five minutes left in the first half. It was started by a good cross from Toronto native Morgan, then the ball came back to Peri Marosevic who headed the ball toward the goal and Koevermans made no mistake.

"Just being at the right place at the right time," Koevermans said. "There can be a moment later on when the goals don't come ... so for the moment it's nice and I'm glad that with these goals I make sure that we won. But even if another guy makes a goal, I don't care, we have to win as a team."

The former Dutch international paid a price on the play as Anzola collided with him. Koevermans had to make a brief trip to the sideline before returning to the game.

Notes: Canadian international Julian de Guzman entered the game in the 61st minute for Nick Soolsma ....Toronto plays next in Major League Soccer on Saturday against Chivas USA at Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.... ....Toronto was again without forward Joao Plata who strained a hamstring in the 4-2 victory at Columbus on Sept. 10. ...Toronto midfielder Eric Avila remains ineligible to play in the group stage of the CCL because of his previous involvement when he was with FC Dallas. He came to Toronto in a trade on Aug. 2.
