Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei will be sidelined four-to-six months following surgery on his left ankle.

Frei was hurt during training on March 24, and the Swiss goalkeeper at first was expected to miss eight-to-10 weeks. Further examination revealed that he had torn ligaments in his ankle.

He appeared to catch his leg in the grass while going after a ball during a training game in the rain at BMO Field.

The team said he had surgery Tuesday.
