Camilo Sanvezzo's goal in the 11th minute was all the Vancouver Whitecaps needed to defeat FC Dallas 1-0 in Major League Soccer action Saturday night.

Camilo made his return to the starting lineup and was a force early for the Whitecaps in front of 18,027 fans at BC Place Stadium.

Goalkeeper Joe Cannon stopped five shots to earn the clean sheet, his fourth of the season.

Camilo broke the scoreless tie with a solid solo effort. He began at the right sideline, cut to the middle of the field and fired a left-footed strike to the left of goalkeeper Chris Seitz. That gives the Brazilian two goals on the campaign, with Lee Young-Pyo picking up the assist.

Seitz was making a surprise start in place of Kevin Hartman, just his second for Dallas and his first this season.

Vancouver (3-2-2) moved up to third in the Western Conference with the win. They began the season 2-0-2, allowing zero goals in that span, but dropped consecutive 3-1 decisions since then, including Wednesday's loss at the hands of undefeated Sporting Kansas City.

FC Dallas (3-3-1) were coming off back-to-back wins at home, needing late goals to clinch both victories. However they remain winless on the road this year (0-3-0).

Cannon made his first stop of the game on a free kick just beyond the penalty box, diving to his right to grab a shot by Daniel Hernandez in the 17th minute. He made another to stop in the 38th minute, retaining his club's one-goal advantage.

Brek Shea had a point-blank opportunity following a free kick but fired it high over the goal.

Shea, of College Station, Tex., had the first scoring chance of the second half but his shot from 25 feet out was corralled by a sprawling Cannon in the 62nd minute and then in the 64th minute Shea was stopped again from just a little further out.

Camilo was robbed at point blank in the 75th minute, taking a cross from Matt Watson, but his rocket along the turf was kicked out by Seitz, his first save of the game.

The most interesting change for the Whitecaps was up front where Omar Salgado made his first career start. The 18-year-old El Paso, Tex., native played the left wing but essentially took the spot of striker Eric Hassli, who was goalless after five games played this season.

Salgado definitely had an impact until he was replaced by Atiba Harris in the 73rd minute. Hassli came into the game in the 79th minute, replacing Camilo.

Vancouver's next game is in Columbus next Saturday while Dallas hosts Real Salt Lake Wednesday.

Notes: Vancouver was without the services of Alain Rochat, out with a left knee sprain. Darren Mattocks, Etienne Barbara and Michael Nanchoff also missed action...Dallas's Ricardo Villar and Andrew Jacobson did not make the trip with the club...This was the third all-time meeting between the two teams — Dallas won both matches — but was the first in Vancouver since the club moved into B.C. Place stadium. The two teams play two more times this season, one more in Vancouver and then in Frisco, Tex.
