Before the game began, Phil Esposito offered a glimpse of the uncompromising struggle that would follow. Where most ceremonial faceoffs are cordial affairs in which the home-team captain is permitted to nudge the puck backward and pick it up, Esposito decided to send a message. Foregoing civility, he watched for the puck leaving Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s hand and hammered it back toward his blue line as if it were the opening puck drop of the Stanley Cup final. Esposito beamed and raised one arm to an adoring Montreal Forum crowd.
