The Calgary Stampeders signed defensive back Brandon Smith to a contract extension Thursday.

Smith had a team-high 65 tackles last season and also registered an interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The fourth-year player was Calgary's nominee for the CFL's outstanding defensive player award.

"Brandon showed tremendous poise with our young defence in 2011 and has grown into one of the leaders of that unit," head coach/GM John Hufnagel said in a statement. "It was important to re-sign Brandon and we are looking for great things from him in 2012."
