QUESTION: I keep getting this file created in my windows temp folder: Perflib - Perfdata - ###.dat The ### changes on each new reboot. I have searched the net to get some help. Unfortunately, I have as yet not found the answer to this problem. I have read that it occurs when you don't power down correctly. Not the case here. I have three computers in my home that are used regularly. This happens only on one of the computers (the one we had built for us at a computer store). To my knowledge this has been happening since we first brought it home. Now approximately 1 1/2 years. The problem is in order to delete this file completely I have to boot up in safe mode and then when I boot up in normal window mode it reappears. I am unable to do a clean disk because you cannot remove the current file unless you are in safe mode. I can delete all of the occurences except for the most recent one. Since this is not how the other two computers work I would think something is creating this that should be able to be turned off. Your help in this matter would be appreciated. Thank you.

ANSWER: From all I can gather, the files can safely be ignored. You can use a program called CCleaner to help you clean up the files (it'll delete all the files in the temporary directories). It'll take care of all but the current one, as that one may be locked.

Check and see if you have any performance monitoring going on. Right-Click on My Computer, select Manage and see if there's any active items under "Performance Logs and Alerts".

Apparently, other monitoring programs can create this temporary file as well, such as disk monitoring software (i.e. Diskeeper).
