The Oilers were founded on November 1, 1971, with the team playing its first season in 1972 as one of twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. The Oilers joined the National Hockey League in the 1979-80 season with fellow WHA franchises Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets and Quebec Nordiques as part of the two leagues' merger. The franchise has won five Stanley Cups in its history.
