Don’t get suckered by cheap emerging markets stocks

Emerging markets are now very cheap relative to the S&P 500, but unfortunately that doesn’t tell us much about their future performance.

The chart below analyzes the ability of emerging markets’ valuation levels to predict future returns. The horizontal axis is the trailing price to earnings ratio for the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. The vertical axis is the twelve-month return for the same benchmark.
