Avoid the violent selloffs: Buy underachieving stocks

In your personal and professional life, it’s never a bad idea to underpromise and overdeliver. When you exceed expectations, everyone is happy.

You should take a similar approach to earnings season, which kicks off next week: Companies that aren’t expected to wow anyone with strong growth in their quarterly profits look so much more appealing than those that are tapped to deliver eye-popping gains.
