SEC adopts social media for corporate disclosure

Now on Facebook: friend requests, photo albums and… corporate news.

According to a new report from the Securities and Exchange Commission, companies that trade on U.S. exchanges are now able to issue corporate announcements over social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Historically, such announcements had to come from formal news releases or corporate filings, such as 8-Ks, but in the past few years securities regulators have attempted to embrace the digital age and that’s changed how news is disseminated.
