Bennett Jones LLP, a law firm with Calgary roots, went national over a decade ago with a move onto Bay Street. More recently, it opened offices in cities as far flung as Beijing, Dubai and Doha. Now, it is finally hanging out a shingle in Vancouver.
Hugh MacKinnon, the firm’s chairman and chief executive officer, says the move comes as the 380-lawyer firm does more business in Vancouver with clients in the liquefied natural gas and mining sectors. “When you’re the biggest firm based in Western Canada ... and you’re not in Vancouver, it is a bit of a hole,” Mr. MacKinnon said in an interview, adding that Vancouver was becoming increasingly important as a business and energy centre. “We’re asked all the time if we are in Vancouver – that didn’t used to happen.”
