X-Treme Sports

Globe and Mail Update

Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals has just gone into sudden death ... yawn.

A pitcher toes the rubber, just one out away from pitching a perfect game ... shrug.

The final seconds tick off the clock as two players go one on one to settle the NBA championship ... who cares?

If regular sports just aren't getting you excited any more, perhaps you need to watch someone put their life on the line all in the name of having a good time. Maybe you need to get a little more extreme.

This September the first rule of extreme is to drop the "e." The X-treme Sports network is preparing to launch on digital cable, bringing you high-octane athletes and sports from around the globe 24 hours a day.

Any thug can strap on a helmet and pads and chase a puck or ball around, but how many of us can do an inverted 360 mctwist on skis? Who dares hurtle down steep roads at break-neck speeds on nothing but a slim piece of fiberglass in the street luge? When was the last time you did an axle grind on a half-pipe ramp in your rollerblades?

From the safety of your couch, you will now have the opportunity to watch other risk life and limb around the clock for your viewing pleasure.

The second rule of extreme is to not return phone calls. Just a little more than a week from the channel's launch, the good people at CanWest aren't giving out many details on the content of their station. As a result, the reader will just have to imagine what will air on the Saturday night program That's Sick.

It is safe to assume extreme sport staples such as snowboarding, skateboarding and mountain climbing will all be represented on X-treme.

Also, look for people to do incredible things on bikes and prepare yourself for brutal kickboxing.

The third and final rule of extreme is: Live for the wipeout. We all know the best part of extreme sports are the spectacular crashes. I challenge you to find anything funnier on TV than a skateboarder missing a trick and landing crotch-first on a metal railing.

It's all part of being extreme (x-treme?)
