With economic uncertainty and rising interest rates on the horizon, the record-breaking new vehicle sales of over two million units in 2017 left industry experts wondering what would be in store for 2018. But if the first half of 2018 is any indication, new car sales volumes remain as strong as ever. Automakers sold over one million new vehicles from January through June this year – virtually the same as last year.

In particular, luxury vehicle sales have continued to show strength, up 5.4 per cent in the first half of the year, with more than 125,000 units sold. Although some luxury brands did see a year-over-year decline in sales, others, including Genesis, Volvo, Land Rover and Audi, experienced sizeable swells.

Canadian consumers’ affinity for premium auto brands could be partly explained by the growing variety of vehicles they offer. In addition to the ultra-high-end models, such as the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, luxury lineups have begun to also increasingly feature entry-level models such as the Genesis G70, Volvo XC40 and Cadillac XT4, attracting a more diverse clientele.
