The rhetoric is heating up in the battle by the Canadian Auto Workers union to organize Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. in Cambridge, Ont. Hemi Mitic, an assistant to CAW president Buzz Hargrove, has sent a letter to TMMC president Ray Tanguay accusing him of "outrageous remarks and inaccuracies" in comments Mr. Tanguay made in a memorandum to employees last month. "We suggest that your team members are hard-working individuals that have contributed greatly to Toyota's huge profit success," Mr. Mitic said in his letter. They contributed $3,000 a week to the bottom line of Toyota Motor Corp. in 2003, he said. The union is making its second attempt to organize about 4,300 workers at the plant. A previous attempt failed when the union withdrew its request to certify the workers after it failed to sign up the 40 per cent of employees need to force a vote on the issue.
