Toronto-based artist Max Dean has won the $25,000 Gershon Iskowitz Prize. In announcing the award, the jury noted that Dean, who was born in Leeds, England, and came to Canada in 1952, "has developed a singular approach to the practice of art that has made him a paradigmatic figure not only in Canada but on the international scene as well."

The prize, established in 1985, recognizes the excellence of an artist's work, and their contribution to the visual arts over a sustained period of time. Staff
