Congratulations to Gaspereau Press co-owner Andrew Steeves, the winner of six Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design. The winners of the 27th annual awards were announced today.

Four of the six winning books designed by Steeves were published by Gaspereau.

Steeves won first and second prize for poetry books for, respectively,  The House that Stands by Stefan A. Rose (Anchorage Press) and The Muskwa Assemblage (Gaspereau) by Don McKay (pictured above).

He also took second prize in the prose fiction category for That Tune Clutches My Heart by Paul Headrick (Gaspereau); and second prize in prose non-fiction for Wisdom & Metaphor by Jan Zwicky (Gaspereau).

His other two prizes were thirds in the prose non-fiction illustrated category for In Black & White by Wesley Bates (Gaspereau; pictured above left) and in the pictorial category for Silver Ghost, photographs by Thaddeus Holownia and text by Harry Thurston (Anchorage Press).

The Alcuin Society handed out 32 awards to presses across the country; the entire list can be seen here. The winners "will be shown across Canada and exhibited at the Tokyo International Book Fair in Japan, and the Frankfurt and Leipzig International Book Fairs. They will compete in the biggest annual book-design competition in the world, in Leipzig, Germany, in February 2010," according to a press release from the Alcuin Society.
