FRED THORNHILL

The 17th annual Scotiabank Giller Prize -- the country's richest prize for fiction -- was awarded Tuesday night during a glitzy gala in Toronto.

Canadian literati sipping drinks from an open bar will be decked out in black tie, or some personalized version thereof, as Alexander MacLeod, David Bergen, Sarah Selecky, Johanna Skibsrud and Kathleen Winter wait anxiously to find out which one of them has won the $50,000 prize.

Globe and Mail publishing reporter John Barber, along with Arts Editor Andrew Gorham and others, filed updates and photos from the cocktail party and dinner and, most importantly of all, announced the winner as soon as she was made known.
