Shakespeare's Freedom By Stephen Greenblatt, University of Chicago Press, 144 pages, $14

Greenblatt, an knowledgeable and exceptionally articulate Shakespearean scholar, examines the ways the Bard's works explored and probed the boundaries of the sort of absolute authority that dominated his times: monarchs over subjects, men over women, God over the world.

House of Holes By Nicholson Baker, Simon & Schuster, 262 pages, $17

Sexually graphic and gleefully goofy, House of Holes is a series of fantasies involving metamorphoses that enable more sexual possibilities than are human. The transformations occur to a long list of characters in a parallel universe that resembles a high-end holiday resort.

Autobiography of Mark Twain: Volume 1 Edited by Harriet Elinor Smith, University of California Press, 414 pages, $29.50

Twain's plain-spoken and controversial autobiography – the first of a projected three volumes – was unpublished until 2010, when it was released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his death. This edition, designed for non-scholarly readers, is the same text as the hardcover edition, but in larger type and without notes.
