Ukrainian-Canadian director Anita Doron will bring the novel Sailor Girl to the big screen.

Markham Street Films has announced Doron will direct the movie version of the book by Globe and Mail editor Sheree-Lee Olson. Born in Transcarpathia of the former USSR, Doron has previously directed the feature-length films The Lesser Blessed, The End of Silence and Late Fragment and lensed an episode of the documentary TV series City Sonic.

Sailor Girl relates the story of a young woman named Kate who signs on for deck duty with a Great Lakes freighter and unexpectedly sails into a world of sexy and dangerous adventures. The story has been adapted for the screen by Globe columnist Johanna Schneller.

"I'm excited to dive into Sailor Girl and direct a movie which takes us into the raw sexuality of a young woman experiencing a life-changing summer in the rough and tough subculture of a Great Lakes commercial ship," said Doron in the statement from Markham Films.
