Trills meet spills in this Canadian slasher-musical, starring Meat Loaf as Roger McCall, a former producer now running a summer musical camp. The indebted Roger encourages kitchen help Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) to reprise a starring role performed a decade before by her brutally murdered mother (Minnie Driver). The new production inspires a backstage masked killer and much singing and gore ensues. Writer-director Jerome Sable, who co-wrote the songs with Eli Batalion, has a sharp ear for musical pastiche, from Andrew Lloyd Weber to heavy metal. But he comes up flat on the horror-musical spoof that plays like summer-stock tribute to Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise. The game cast includes Douglas Smith as Camilla’s twin brother and fellow kitchen skivvy, Buddy, Ephraim Ellis as a camper who is (groan) “gay for musicals,” and predatory director Artie Getz (Brandon Uranowitz), whose kabuki production allows for a number of masked suspects.
