Toronto video artist Vera Frenkel has been named the winner of the 1999-2000 Bell Canada Award for outstanding achievement in video art. The award, established in 1990 and administered by the Canada Council, is worth $10,000.
She will receive the prize next week, when the board of the Canada Council holds its annual "out-of-Ottawa" meeting in Toronto.
Frenkel has become a major international force in video art over the past 25 years and has had her work presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Venice Biennale, among other venues. She is currently readying for Body Missing, a video installation meditation on the art-theft policies of Nazi Germany that will be presented in Detroit, Vienna, Paris and Toronto over the next two years.
