Denzal Sinclaire EmArcy Rating: **½
The name has changed -- Canada's Denzal Sinclaire used to sing as Denzil Pinnock -- but the voice remains the same, a smooth, youthfully debonaire tenor. Pinnock made some headway a few years ago singing old Nat King Cole material; Sinclaire is moving now in a more eclectic and generally contemporary direction with his own songs, Beatles hits and Burt Bacharach tunes. Careerwise, it might work -- if it's not in fact too "pop" for the jazz market and too jazzy for the pop world. Musically, it's a mixed success, less convincing and more contrived than his Cole tributes. For a man who sings so easily, Sinclaire seems to be trying awfully hard.
