Alex Janvier, who struggled through residential school to become one of Alberta's greatest painters, is being recognized with a lifetime National Aboriginal Achievement Award.

Considered one of the first native artists to paint in a modern abstract style, Janvier's work is found in numerous collections.

The other 13 award recipients include: West Coast painter and carver Freda Diesing; former broadcaster Jonah Kelly and Nunavut carver Ohito Ashoona.

The awards will be presented in Winnipeg on March 10. CP
