Album cover for Avril Lavigne’s new single.

One pill makes you larger, one pill makes you small and the one that the record companies give you don't do anything at all.

Two years ago, pop singer Avril Lavigne spoke to The Globe and Mail about her album Goodbye Lullaby, saying that it was a struggle to make and that the record label (RCA) wanted more bratty, rhythmic material and less balladry from her. "No one was seeing eye to eye," she said then.

Now, Lavigne is on Epic, the label that Tuesday released her new single, Here's to Never Growing Up, a strum-happy shout-along (co-written by fiancé Chad Kroeger), with an anthemic chorus that toasts high hormones and resists adulthood. Moreover, the art attached to the single has the 28-year-old woman clutching a teddy bear.

So, what happened to the maturing songwriter who supposedly wished to start acting her age? The one who penned a grown-up song for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie?

Go ask Avril, she who is still just small.
