On the road: Jenn Grant's necessary accessories
The Halifax-based pop-folk singer hit the road this month in support of her latest album, The Beautiful Wild. She talks about her necessary accessories – carry-alongs that include musical instruments, footwear, gadgets and, most indispensable of all, her musician-husband
iPhone Camera: “Visual representation is so important these days. I have a Super-8 app, which I used to film my latest video [at jenngrant.com]. My brother is a filmmaker, and I’m sure you could have a debate on the validity of an app like this. But people thought I had used a real Super-8 camera for the video. And it’s nice to have so much control and to be able to do something on my own.”Fernando Morales/The Globe and Mail
Guitar: “It’s an Airline Tuxedo reproduction, made by Eastwood Guitars. I like that it’s based on a vintage guitar, and I like that it’s a Canadian company. It’s the first guitar I’ve bought online. We were on the road when it arrived at our house in the country. It sat on the porch for three days.”Fernando Morales/The Globe and Mail
Sleep Accessories: “I’m obsessed with sleep. I have a sensitive voice, and proper rest is necessary. On the road, I need an eye mask. I need a glass of water, and I like to have earplugs close by in case it gets noisy, which it often does. I don’t like heat on or any air conditioning, because of my voice. I use a humidifier. Cowboy Boots: “A woman told me she had a vision of me wearing boots on stage, so my mother thought I should get a pair. I’ve worn them at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and the Bowery Ballroom in New York. I’ve worn them at the Confederation Centre at the East Coast Music Awards, with a symphony orchestra. And I’ve worn them in front of 300,000 people on Parliament Hill, at the concert for Will and Kate.”Fernando Morales/The Globe and Mail
Daniel Ledwell: “He’s my husband and my producer and my driver and he’s in my band. I have all kinds of songs about him – he weaves in and out of my songwriting. Jenn Grant music is really Jenn Grant and Daniel Ledwell music, because he makes it sound like I want it to.
