Sarah McLachlanChris Bolin/The Globe and Mail

It seems like a natural fit - Sarah McLachlan and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra - but surprisingly, they have never performed together. Until now.

MusicFest Vancouver will open its festival this summer with McLachlan performing "classic hits and new favourites" with the VSO, led by guest conductor Leslie Dala.

The songs have been handpicked by McLachlan for orchestration.

"I can't wait to hear the new arrangements for full symphony of some of Ms. McLachlan's memorable songs," said MusicFest Vancouver program director George Laverock in a prepared statement. "Guest conductor Leslie Dala is internationally respected for his sensitive collaborations with voices."

Tickets for the August 5 concert at the Orpheum Theatre go on sale on Saturday.
