The Flaming Lips: Flaming Side of the Moon

The Flaming Lips choose to go to the moon, not because it is easy, but because – well, just because.

In 2009, Wayne Coyne and the Oklahoma aural adventurers released a track-by-track cover of Pink Floyd's classic space-rock opus from 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Now, this week, the Lips further their fascination with the release of Flaming Side of the Moon, which the group describes as 'an immersive companion piece,' formatted to be played simultaneously with the original album.

Moreover, the Lips count themselves as among the conspiracy buffs who believe the original album psychedelically synchs up with the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. As such, the group suggests playing all three pieces – Dark Side, Flaming Side and The Wizard of Oz – simultaneously.

The ambient and instrumental music of Flaming Side of the Moon, currently streaming on soundcloud, will be available digitally and on vinyl in a limited edition of 100 LPs. Critics might view this augmentation as a mustache to the Mona Lisa, while others may choose to see the untraditional 'double album' as eclipsing the original.
