The CRTC says it will hold public consultations on the fate of a fund designed to support small-market TV programming.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says spending on local programming, particularly news, has stagnated and even declined since the fund's inception in 2009.

In the three years, cable and satellite companies have contributed over $300-million to support programming at 75 stations across the country.

The CRTC says it wants to assess whether the fund should be maintained, modified or cancelled.
