Two magazines published by The Globe and Mail won a combined four gold medals at this year's National Magazine Awards.

Globe Style Advisor claimed the top prize in three categories – Still-Life Photography, Portrait Photography and Spot Illustration – which were the publication's first NMA golds since it launched in 2012.

Report on Business magazine won one gold and two silver prizes from a dozen nominations.

"These awards provide further proof of how The Globe and Mail is broadening its quality to new content areas," said David Walmsley, The Globe's editor-in-chief. "Style Advisor is a world class magazine delivered with a rare panache and these first gold medals for the publication show how the team has developed to become best in class. Report on Business magazine delivered another stellar year of provocative cover stories and smart insight with in-depth journalism that our business readers find to be vital."

The Walrus was the most decorated magazine at Friday's awards gala, held at Toronto's Arcadian Court, with four gold and three silver prizes. Maisonneuve and L'actualité also won four golds. Maisonneuve took home the top honour as Magazine of the Year.

Writer Desmond Cole was the biggest individual winner, earning a gold medal as Best New Magazine Writer and two silver awards for his essay "The Skin I'm In," which appeared in Toronto Life and detailed his personal experience of police discrimination against black men.

One night earlier, The Globe led the inaugural Digital Publishing Awards with four golds and two silvers, while CBCNews.ca won the top individual award as Digital Publication of the Year.

"Winning the most awards in the industry for digital storytelling is a very heartening experience, especially as the wins recognized long-term investigative work, and stellar explanatory journalism created by a wide team working across the newsroom and in our innovation lab," Mr. Walmsley said.
