REALITY Long Island Medium TLC, 7 p.m. The spirits are about to speak. Recently returned for its third season, this popular unscripted series revolves around the brassy suburban mom Theresa Caputo, who works as a professional medium when she isn’t trying to raise a family in her hometown of Hicksville, N.Y. As might be expected, most episodes in the series find the brassy blonde trying to juggle domesticity with her daily clairvoyant duties. Case in point: Tonight’s third-season opener, in which she allegedly talks to a woman’s dead daughter while preparing for her own son’s return for college. In the second show, Theresa supposedly connects a widower with his long-dead wife while her own husband and kids plan her surprise birthday party. Shouldn’t she have seen that coming?

REALITY The Mistress Slice, 8 p.m. Reality-TV hath no fury like a woman scorned. Launched two weeks ago, this new series stars the peculiar media oddity Sarah Symonds, whose fame stems entirely from her alleged affairs with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and the author Lord Jeffrey Archer, both married men. In this bizarre setup, Symonds assumes the role of “adultery expert” off on rescue missions to save lost souls caught up in similar no-future affairs with other women’s husbands. In tonight’s first epiosde, she counsels Michelle, whose secret lover has promised to be with her forever once his last child graduates from school. In the second show, Symonds meets Jenn, whose clandestine canoodling with a married man has already resulted in the loss of her job and her children. Wake up, ladies!

DOCUMENTARY Titanic: The Canadian Story CBC, 9 p.m. Produced in consort with the recent 100 th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic, this new documentary is at once somber and uplifting. Among the more than 2,200 passengers and crew were 130 men, women and children en route to Canada. Using letters and diary entries, the film relates the untold stories of several of those on board, including railway magnate Charles Hays, who made a doomful prediction before the Titanic’s maiden voyage and perished at sea, and Bridget Bradley, a young Irish immigrant who barely escaped the tragedy and went on to marry a Canadian and live a full life in Gananoque, Ont.

COMEDY Guys With Kids NBC, 10 p.m. Jimmy Fallon is making the most of his surging popularity on American television. The late-night talk host and former SNLer is co-creator and executive producer of this good-natured sitcom about three thirtysomething dudes trying to hold onto their youth while wrangling new duties as the fathers of young children. In tonight’s opener, Chris (Jesse Bradford) attempts to attend a basketball game, but first has to find a babysitter without his wife finding out. Meanwhile, his buddy Gary (Anthony Anderson) is struggling to find some alone time with his wife, and Nick (Zach Cregger) is attempting damage control for forgetting an important occasion with his wife. Much like Fallon himself, the show is very sweet, with an occasional sharp edge.

MOVIE Young Man with a Horn TCM, 11:15 p.m ET; 8:15 p.m. PT Today’s leading men could take a lesson from Kirk Douglas. While making one movie a year is considered a blistering pace for most actors today, Douglas cranked out more than two-dozen films in the fifties decade, starting with this 1950 biographical drama loosely based on the life and times of jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Set during the Roaring Twenties, the story casts Douglas as Rick Martin, a struggling trumpet player with aspirations of becoming a jazzman. Rick lands a gig with a big band and marries the beautiful singer Jo (Doris Day), but then everything falls apart when he begins an affair with the complicated femme fatale Amy (Lauren Bacall). Real-life composer Hoagy Carmichael – a close friend of Beiderbecke–lends credibility as Douglas’s sidekick.
