Rebecca, a musical based on the popular 1938 novel by Daphne du Maurier, will have its North American premiere in Toronto before going to Broadway, according to the show's lead producer.

Global Broadway Productions's Ben Sprecher revealed to The Globe and Mail that he plans to open the Gothic romance in London's West End in Spring of 2011, then bring it to North America in October, 2012, starting in Toronto. Mirvish Productions will present the pre-Broadway try-out and possibly co-produce, he said.

With music by Sylvester Levay and lyrics by Michael Kunze, Rebecca had its German-language world premiere in Vienna in 2006. It has been translated into English by playwright Christopher Hampton. Sprecher, whose recent Broadway producing credits include revivals of American Buffalo and Brighton Beach Memoirs, said he has tapped Tony-winning Australian director Michael Blakemore to co-direct with Francesca Zambello, who worked on the Vienna production.
