Theatre 20 announces inaugural season Add to ...

Theatre 20, a new Toronto theatre company formed by Canada's foremost musical theatre performers, announced its first round of full productions on Monday.

A Winnipeg Fringe Festival hit and Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking 1970 musical, Company, are on the bill in the company's 2012- 2013 season.

Colm Wilkinson, who played the title role in the original Canadian production of Phantom of the Opera, will direct the professional premiere of Bloodless: The Trial of Burke and Hare next fall.

Written by Winnipeg's Joseph Aragon and based on a true 19th-century tale of Irish serial killers, the show will be workshopped this spring ahead of a run at the Panasonic Theatre from Oct. 16 to Nov. 11, 2012.

Company, which includes such well-known Sondheim songs as The Ladies Who Lunch and Being Alive, will be mounted at Harbourfront Centre’s Enwave Theatre for a run in 2013.

Theatre 20 artistic director Adam Brazier ( Assassins) will direct and Gary Griffin, the Chicago director who is a regular at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, is on board as a creative consultant.

Casting for the shows is yet to be announced, but Theatre 20's roster of founding artists include such well-known Canadian talents as Wilkinson, Brazier, Brent Carver, Louise Pitre, Steven Sutcliffe, Juan Chioran and Evan Buliung.
