Burn Notice Season 3 (2009)
You really have to watch these secret intelligence agencies (see also: Chuck). Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) was disowned by his spymasters and doesn't know where his next double-cross is coming from. The comedy-drama benefits from a high-calibre cast: Bruce Campbell ( The Evil Dead) as Westen's friend Sam, Sharon Gless (of Cagney and Lacey) as Westen's mum, and Gabrielle Anwar as Fiona, Westen's regularly imperilled ex-girlfriend. Bonuses include a look at the stunt work and a 2009 San Diego Comic-Con panel discussion.
Drop Dead Diva (2009)
Created for the U.S. Lifetime channel, this show about lawyers opens with a bang. Well, two of them. A thin model named Deb (Brooke D'Orsay) dies in a car crash, and a full-bodied lawyer named Jane (Brooke Elliott) lies dying from a gunshot wound. Then Deb takes over Jane's body. It's all about body-image squabbles to start with (one wants to diet, one doesn't), but eventually the show settles into a legal drama with jokes. The cast includes stand-up comic Margaret Cho as Teri, Jane's legal assistant.
