James Griffiths is the Asia correspondent for The Globe and Mail, based in Hong Kong. Prior to joining The Globe, James spent more than five years with CNN International, where he was a senior producer, reporting on the ground from such places as China, South Korea, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. He led CNN’s digital coverage of the 2019 Hong Kong protests and was part of a team reporting on the earliest days of the coronavirus pandemic. He is the author of two books, The Great Firewall of China: How to Build and Control an Alternative Version of the Internet, and Speak Not: Empire, Identity, and the Politics of Language.
