An annual awards program celebrating the best of corporate Canada

Overview

Report on Business magazine’s CEO of the Year program shines a light on exemplary leadership in Canada by conferring honours on executives for special achievement in five different categories, with one being selected for the prestigious CEO of the Year award.

These are CEOs who have stood above their peers over the past 12 to 24 months when it comes to strategy, social responsibility, vision, innovation or starting fresh.

Award categories:

  • Corporate Citizen of the Year
    Awarded to a CEO whose personal leadership exemplifies the idea that businesses can do well by doing good. This leader’s decisions have made their company an excellent corporate citizen via its environmental, social, advocacy, community and/or other corporate social responsibility initiatives.
  • Global Visionary of the Year
    Awarded to a CEO who has successfully expanded the scope of their organization beyond Canada’s borders. The winner demonstrates an exceptional understanding of international commerce and shrewd eye for choosing markets, establishing timelines and forging the connections needed to build a global brand.
  • Innovator of the Year
    Awarded to a CEO whose vision and guidance has been instrumental in the successful creation and commercialization of a truly disruptive product or service, and/or who has pioneered a groundbreaking way of doing business.
  • New CEO of the Year
    Awarded to a CEO with less than three years of tenure in their current role, who has had a significant impact on the company and its strategy.
  • Strategist of the Year
    Awarded to a CEO whose bold decisions have materially changed and improved the strategic position of their business.

Criteria:

To qualify a CEO must:

  • Run a Canadian company or the Canadian arm of an international enterprise
  • Have held their position for at least 12 months
  • Have demonstrated organization success over the past one to three years, as measured by revenue growth, profitability, share price, employee counts or some combination of these elements.

CEO of public or private companies will be considered for the award. In some cases, CEOs of not-for-profit organization, industry associations or academic institutions may be honoured provided their work is dedicated to serving or is innately involved with the business community.

The CEO of the Year gala returns in 2022 as an exclusive in-person event to honour the year’s winners and reveal the overall CEO of the Year.

No.

Can I nominate a CEO for consideration?

No. CEOs are chosen by the Report on Business newsroom.

When are the winners announced?

Winners will be announced via press release in September 2022. The CEO of the Year and full editorial coverage will appear on the Report on Business magazine website on Nov. 24, 2022 and in print to The Globe and Mail subscribers on Nov. 26, 2022.
