Applying Foreign Law in Canadian Class Actions

On December 28, 2018, the Ontario Court of Appeal released its decision in the case of Das v George Weston Limited. At 114 pages, the Court’s decision is thoroughly reasoned and substantive. It also deals with important issues that are significant to all class action practitioners, including choice of law in class proceedings, the interpretation of foreign law, and costs in public-interest class proceedings.

On the Deal Q&A: Mining Complexity

Nemaska Lithium is building an electrochemical plant and spodumene mine in Québec. The closing of a $1.1-billion financing package in May — the largest in the global industry to date — created a big buzz among domestic and foreign investors alike. Here, Lexpert talks to the counsel who pulled off the deal.

Safety First, Cannabis Second

The legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada heralds a new era for employers, who must now deal with the potential implications of the drug in their workplaces.

No ‘alternatives’ anymore

There are no “alternative” legal service providers anymore, writes Marketing columnist Heather Suttie. Lawyers and other professionals who provide legal services can now be found outside the traditional law firm partnership structure. Providing responsive, solution-oriented, client-first legal services require continual transformation to meet the market’s everchanging demands, while retaining distinctiveness, and setting divisiveness aside.
