The future of class actions across Canada looks complicated -- and changing. In July 2019, the Law Commission of Ontario released its much-anticipated final report, “Class Actions: Objectives, Experiences and Reforms.” Two corporate-commercial lawyers review the highlights of the report, while another two litigators give their perspective from the defence side.
When the Competition Bureau released its 2019-2020 annual plan, it said it wanted to make the Bureau a world-class competition agency in a rapidly advancing digital economy. The plan notes the emergence of data-driven platforms and “network effects” as numerous and unpredictable. Here, a competition lawyer and a Bureau deputy commissioner describe what’s on the Bureau’s agenda: more focus on digital technology and its risks.
