Halifax police say the death of a 31-year-old man in the city’s downtown has been ruled a homicide.

The victim, who has been identified as Ryan Michael Sawyer, was found unresponsive on the sidewalk of Prince Street at 1:15 a.m. Saturday.

Police say he died in hospital.

Halifax Police Const. John MacLeod says one man was taken into custody early Saturday morning but released without charges later that day.

On Saturday police said in a statement that they found the man unresponsive while responding to a disturbance that involved several people.

Police declined to say how many people were involved in the disturbance.
