Homicide investigators confirm the 19-year-old man shot to death in Mission, B.C., was the same teenager who prompted an unusual warning from Abbotsford police in August.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesman Cpl. Frank Jang said Varinderpal Gill was found dead in a pickup truck in the parking lot of a Mission shopping mall at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Abbotsford police issued a warning to the public on Aug. 14 saying Gill was “known to be involved in gang conflict” and they urged residents to stay away from the man and call police if he was spotted.

“He is also at risk of violence by other gang members. Because many gang shootings occur in public places, this means Varinderpal Gill’s presence in public places creates a serious risk to public safety as well,” the warning in August said.

Gill’s death was not random, said Jang during a news conference Thursday at the scene of the Mission attack.

“We believe there were people who targeted Varinderpal Gill for death. They marked him for death,” he said.

“Anyone who was associated to him was really in harm’s way, and now he is the victim of homicide.”

Gill was not alone in the truck when the shooting occurred and Jang said those people are being interviewed.

He also said Gill’s family had been approached in hopes of identifying Gill’s associates and friends who could explain what might have led to the shooting.

“There has been one person arrested, but that person hasn’t been charged. We believe that person has information, we are questioning that person right now,” Jang said.

Police said they believe a sport utility vehicle set ablaze in Abbotsford just hours after the shooting is linked to Gill’s death and witnesses were being urged to come forward to report any suspicious people or vehicles.

“This was a brazen shooting in a busy shopping complex and those responsible showed absolutely no regard for the safety of the community,” said Jang.

“It is very fortunate that no one was hurt, other than our victim.”
