Saskatchewan’s police watchdog and Regina police have been called in to investigate after an armed suspect was fatally shot during a confrontation with Saskatoon police.

Saskatoon police say officers were called to an apartment building in the city’s Mayfair neighbourhood at around 5:45 p.m. Thursday for reports of a man with a gun.

Authorities say when police arrived, they heard gunshots.

Police say officers were confronted by an armed male when they entered the building and he was fatally shot.

No police officers were injured.

Saskatoon police say in a release that the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team and the Regina Police Service will investigate the officer-involved shooting along with two independent observers.
