The on-slope nickel mine took over what was previously a peppercorn plantation owned by locals that reside at the foot of the hill. The site is overlooking Lakes Matano – the deepest lake in Indonesia – Towuti and Mahalona. Vale’s nickel mine in Sorowako is the largest mine in Sulawesi, which counts for 70,566 hectares (174,372 acres). The mining activity in the area presents a threat to biodiversity and the remaining rainforest area in Sulawesi. The environmental impact from nickel mining is manyfold, with deforestation often leading to floods, land slides, water contamination, disruption of access to freshwater, and air pollution.
