WORLD WAR II VE DAY PC HARRY CARROLL WAS FESTOONED WITH PAPER TAPE AS GAY THRONGS USED HIM FOR A MAYPOLE, HAD TO UNTANGLE HIMSELF SEVERAL TIMES AND RETIRE THRICE TO REMOVE LIPSTICK MARKS. [MAY 7, 1945 -- VICTORY IN EUROPE CELEBRATED IN TORONTO -- PC Harry Carroll was festooned with paper tape as gay throngs used him for a maypole, had to untangle himself several times and retire thrice to remove lipstick marks. Spontaneous celebratory parties and mass gatherings were held across the country on Monday, May 7, 1945 as the first "unofficial" news of Germany's surrender and the end of the war in Europe reached North America. WORLD WAR II V-E Day ADV FOR WEEKEND MAY 4-5 WITH "VE DAY" BY JOSEPH B. FLEMING. NEW YORK: Thousands jam Nassau and Wall Streets in New York's financial district May 7, 1945 to celebrate the report of the German surrender that ends the war in Europe. Amid falling ticker tape, some people are perched on the base of the George Washington statue at the U.S. sub-Treasury Building. Trinity Church is in the background. President Truman proclaimed V-E Day May 8, 1945, and New Yorkers celebrated again.

WORLD WAR II VE DAY BIGGEST MASS CELEBRATION IN TORONTO'S HISTROY ALMOST INSTANTANEOUSLY GREETED ANNOUNCEMENT OF "VE-DAY" YESTERDAY, WITH CROWDS PARADING ON FOOT AND DECORATED CARS LOADED DOWN TO BREAKING POINT WITH WHISTLE-BLOWERS AND FLAG WAVERS, MANY IN UNIFORM. LOOKING DOWN FROM BUILDINGS, PAVEMENT APPEARED SNOW-COVERED. [Added caption: Two women in this group have been subsequently identified -- woman wearing hat and sitting with group in centre and waving flag is Harriet (Hunter) Sutton; woman on left front wheel is Inez (Collins) Wilson. John NEMETH. RR I, Walsingham, Ontario. Tobacco Champion---John Nemeth of RR 1, Walsingham, shows tobacco leaves to his wife after winning the top award in the 25th annual tobacco competition at Norfolk County Fair in Simcoe. There were 76 Ontario entries. He won the same contest three years ago.
