In November, the City of Mississauga joined 30 other international municipalities, including Shanghai, Berlin and Bogota, in signing onto the Cities Changing Diabetes program, which aims to combat the rise of chronic illness among city residents. The city’s mayor Bonnie Crombie joined The Globe and Mail’s André Picard in a conversation about the program as part of The Globe’s Future Cities, Future Care webcast, which invited health care and urban planning experts from across Canada to talk about how the places we live could contribute more positively to our overall health. Additional panel discussions were hosted by The Globe’s Health Care Reporter Andrea Woo, as well as Opinion Content Editor Adrian Lee, who were joined by experts including 8 80 Cities Founder Gil Penalosa; Dr. Angela Mashford-Pringle, who is the Indigenous Health Lead at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto; bariatric medicine specialist Dr. Sean Wharton, and more.
