What is it?

The Mercedes-AMG C63 coupe is still a sledgehammer. Mercedes has issued its retort to BMW's M4, and on paper anyway, it looks like AMG has M division beat this time.

Signature feature

AMG doesn't just shoehorn massive, torque-rich V-8s into Mercedes products any more – oh, wait, yes it does. The C63 coupe shares the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V-8 with its sedan counterpart, as well as the AMG GT. Mercedes will offer two versions of the C63, the standard one with 476 hp (0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds), and the "S" model with 510 hp (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds). For reference, the M4 has "only" 425 hp, and takes 4.1 seconds to hit 100 km/h despite the fact it weighs 100 kilograms less than the Benz.

What else is new?

Mercedes is offering a limited Edition 1 for the C63 S coupe, but it is only for the brave (or brash). It features matte grey paint, with yellow speed stripes, yellow painted rims, and lots of carbon-fibre bits. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard, too.

Under the hood

We'll miss the 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V-8 from the old C63, but sacrifices must be made for fuel economy. Compared to the sedan, the coupe has fatter tires and shorter rear axle ratios, which help it accelerate ever-so-slightly faster. AMG also reinforced the coupe's body structure, and fitted a beefed-up rear axle carrier. Huge flared wheel arches help cover the bigger tires and widened track. The S model uses an electronic limited slip differential, while the regular C63 makes do with a mechanical LSD.

When can we buy it, and for how much?

In Canada, the C63 coupe will arrive in the second quarter of 2016 as a 2017 model. Expect a slight price bump over the C63 sedan, which starts at $74,800.

Cool quotient

3 stars (out of 5)

Under those brash Edition 1 stickers, it's a good-looking machine with the specs to back it up.
