2016 Mazda CX-5.

What is it?

The 2016 Mazda CX-5, one of the most entertaining small SUVs – and a pillar of Mazda's limited lineup – dukes it out in a world of tall wagons that must constantly reinvent themselves, or fall out of favour in a blink. So, two years after its launch, a facelift.

Signature feature

A new grille "tightens" up the design, says North American design chief Derek Jenkins. Then there's the interior which looks and feels richer than the plasticy current model. Jenkins says the functionality of the controls has been improved, too.

What else is new

Ride comfort and quiet are better, says Mazda, thanks to new front and rear seats, an updated suspension and more sound insulation. Mazda says it has tuned up the all-wheel drive, also.

Under the hood

The most popular 2.5-litre four-cylinder will get better real-world fuel economy, we're told.

When can we buy it, and for how much?

On sale in late January. Pricing won't be announced until the new year, but don't expect any increases.

Cool quotient: 3 out of 5
