Honda introduced the 2019 Acura RDX Prototype on Monday in Detroit. The five-passenger SUV will be available midway through the year. Facts and figures:

  • A full remake of the entry-level premium SUV adopts Acura’s design language.
  • The Acura platform is re-engineered for a lighter, stiffened body.
  • A new 10-speed transmission is paired with a 2.0-litre, 16-valve DOHC VTEC turbo engine. The rear differential boosts torque 40 per cent over the outgoing model. Torque vectoring all-wheel drive returns.
  • In the cabin, heated and ventilated front sport seats are covered with full-grain Napa leather. Both front seats adjust 16 ways electronically.
  • Each spot on the new touch pad precisely maps the corresponding action on the 10.2-inch HD centre display. Acura calls the technology “the world’s first application of absolute positioning in the driving environment.”
  • A voice recognition system is intertwined. 4G LTE Wi-Fi is available.
  • Music flows through a 16-channel, 710-watt 3D system developed by Panasonic. Four thin speakers are mounted in the ceiling.
  • The exterior design, interpreted from the Precision Concept vehicle, is intended to project a “low, wide and sleek presence.” The wheelbase is lengthened by 6.3 cm.
  • Inspired by the NSX supercar, there are four driving modes: sports, sport+, comfort and snow.
  • A wide panoramic roof comes standard.
  • Available safety features include hill-start assist, surround-view cameras, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic monitor and blind spot.
