What is it?

The new mid-size premium SUV will compete with the Lexus RX, NMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class, among others. The segment represents 38 per cent of the luxury auto market in Canada.

Under the hood

Optional 330-horsepower, 2.7-litre twin turbocharged, Ti0VCT EcoBoost V-6, offering 370 lb-ft of torque. Standard engine is a 3.7-litre V-6 with 330 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Six-speed automatic transmission.

What else is new?

Lower and wider look distinguishes the exterior styling from the Ford Edge base. A camera system provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle. Self-parking and self-braking anti-collision technology, similar to that demonstrated by BMW at the Consumer Electronics Show recently.

When can we buy it?

Will be sold in the United States this fall, Canada soon thereafter. Pricing wasn't announced; 2015 base model starts at $44,890.

Lincoln ranks eighth in the United States for sales in the luxury car class, down 59 per cent from the 1990 peak according to Bloomberg News. The MKX is one of four new models backed by a $2.5-billion investment. Lincoln sales surged 15 per cent as gas prices fell and actor Matthew McConaughey endorsed the brand with eclectic commercials parodied by Jim Carrey on Saturday Night Live and Ellen DeGeneres Conan O'Brien on talk shows.
