10W-30, 5W-20 or even 0W-40. Picking the right viscosity for your engine makes all the difference in the performance and maintenance of your car.

A quick lesson in motor oil states that a regular engine needs oil that flows under the prevailing weather or running conditions. A 10W or 5W is the index for how easily the oil flows in winter (hence the W). A 10W oil thickens more than a 5W. The other number indicates the oil's resistance to thinning at high temperatures. And this is where the minivan and the Dodge Viper really differ.

While the van probably only needs a SAE 5W-20, the Challenger's 6.4-litre eight-cylinder will benefit from an SAE 0W-40 synthetic motor oil. As with the other performance oil companies, Amsoil created multi-viscous synthetic motor oils specifically to address the needs of high horsepower vehicles.

Amsoil SAE 0W-40 Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil suggests in its promotions that this is the product to use year-round in high-performance cars. Amsoil claims that it withstands the stress and high-running temperatures while lubricating the performance parts to avoid sludge buildup. Anything that keeps the car off the mechanics's hoist is a good investment.
